Liberia Renews Support for Moroccan Autonomy Plan Most Viable Solution to Sahara Dispute

Liberia reiterated its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative before the UN Committee of 24, considering it the “most viable solution” to the regional dispute over the Sahara issue.

During the regional conference of the Committee of 24, held this week in Managua, Nicaragua, the Liberian mission affirmed that the initiative, presented by Morocco in 2007, is described by two-thirds of UN member states as serious, credible, and realistic.

In this context, the mission commended the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), considering it to have given new impetus to the ongoing UN-led political process and to provide a suitable framework for reaching a realistic, practical, and lasting political solution to this artificial conflict.

In this regard, the mission reiterated its country’s “full support” for the path embodied in this resolution, namely the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty.

It also expressed its support, on this occasion, for the mediation efforts of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura.

The mission further called on all parties concerned—Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario Front—to continue their constructive engagement in this process in order to reach a final political solution to this regional dispute.

Addressing the socio-economic development underway in the southern provinces of the Kingdom, thanks to the new development model launched in 2015, the mission emphasized that this dynamic is contributing to improving the living conditions of the region’s inhabitants.

Before the members of the Committee of 24, the Liberian mission also expressed its country’s concern regarding the humanitarian situation of the population held in the Tindouf camps, stressing the need for humanitarian aid to reach those in need in a transparent and accountable manner.

The mission also reiterated its call for a census of the population in these camps, in accordance with international humanitarian standards.

In closing, the Liberian mission condemned the recent attacks launched by the Polisario Front against civilians in the Moroccan city of Smara, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining the ceasefire and ensuring full cooperation with MINURSO.
