It is worth mentioning that another national operator WANA has recently obtained mobile telephony and Internet access licences (2005/2006). We will let you know any future action plan of this operator in the Sahara region.

As part of the implementation of universal service functions in accordance with existing regulations and following proposals by national operators, the Management Committee of Universal Telecommunications Service has validated several telecommunications projects.

telecom-en03.PNG

The completed projects on the improvement of telecommunications infrastructure concerning localities belonging to the Sahara region are presented below:
Other universal service projects, concerning other localities falling within the Sahara region, are being implemented by national telecommunication operators.
As for the tri-annual Genie programme launched by the Kingdom of Morocco for extending the use of information technology in schools, multimedia rooms were equipped in two colleges, three high schools and four primary schools in Dakhla and Smara.

Two training rooms were created in Laayoune and Dakhla. These rooms are intended for the training of teachers in charge of maintaining multimedia spaces. In the next two phases of GENIE, information technology will be introduced in all institutions and to the strengthening of digital educational content.

Satellite Telecommunications Services:
In addition to telecommunications operators, the Kingdom of Morocco has granted eight (08) licenses relating to the creation and exploitation of public telecommunications networks via satellite:

- Five (05) GMPCS (Personal Mobile Communications by Satellite), including:
O Globlstar North Africa for the use of GLOBALSTAR satellite network;
