Road Network Minimize

Powerful unifying factor, the road network played a leading role in the development of the region following the return of the Sahara region to the motherland.

Indeed, the road network has accompanied port development. Therefore, It thus established direct complementarity between land routes and sea routes according to a dual orientation: east-west access to the sea from inland areas, and north-south access to create a direct link with the different development poles north of the kingdom.

Following the Sahara region liberation, the main objectives assigned to the road program in the region were as follows:

• Ensure the delivery of essential goods. Indeed, the creation of road links allowed the annexation of the region to production and distribution centers including the Souss-based national rich agricultural plains.
• Break the geographical isolation of the region through the creation of integrated connections to the national network. The setting up of roads in line with applicable standards has led to the extension of the national network and consolidated North-South ties between the Kingdom of Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and the remaining sub-Saharan countries.
• Improve internal means of creating a network of roads linking rural centers to urban areas to stimulate intra-regional trade.

At the beginning, road network in the region included only 70 km of modern roads. The rest was hardly practicable: some tracks made of natural materials on which was applied bitumen with very limited resistance.

Since 1975, large investments were made by the Kingdom of Morocco to strengthen road network despite specific implementation problems in the desert (maintenance, silting…). The following table shows the state of the road network in the Sahara region on December 31, 2005 (km):
