UN Security Council Commends Role of CNDH Regional Commissions in Dakhla and Laayoune
11/1/2019

The UN Security Council praised, Wednesday, the role of the Regional Commissions of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) in Dakhla and Laayoune, as well as Morocco's interaction with Special Procedures of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

In its resolution No 2494, which extends MINURSO's mandate until Oct. 31, 2020, the Security Council "welcomes steps and initiatives taken by Morocco, the role played by the Commissions of the National Human Rights Council in Dakhla and Laayoune, and Morocco’s interaction with Special Procedures of the United Nations Human Rights Council."

The Security Council also expressed its "deep concern" over the "continued hardships" faced by the populations of the Tindouf camps in Algeria.

In its last report on the Sahara issue to the Security Council, the UN chief slammed the leaders of Polisario for their serious and systematic human rights violations in the Tindouf camps.

In this report, the Secretary-General listed the demonstrations, marches and sit-ins that have multiplied in the Tindouf camps from April to June 2019 to protest against the blockade and restrictive measures on freedom of movement imposed by Polisario in the Tindouf camps.

The resolution reiterated the Security Council's request for the registration and census of the populations of the Tindouf camps, stressing that "efforts should be made in this regard”
